APD E1 Series: Programmable High Voltage up to 8 kV

Analytical instruments, detectors and high-resolution measurement systems require a high-voltage source that can be adjusted precisely and remains stable despite changes in load or input voltage. The APD E1 Series provides 1 W of regulated high voltage and covers positive and negative output voltages from 100 to 8,000 VDC.
The output can be programmed from 0 to 100% using an analogue 0–5 VDC signal. Low ripple, good line and load regulation, external calibration capability and six-sided shielding make the series a powerful solution for sensitive electronic systems.
Why use a regulated high-voltage source?
In detectors and measurement transducers, even a small change in supply voltage can affect the output signal. A regulated high-voltage source keeps the selected value largely constant within the permitted input and load variations. This improves reproducibility and simplifies calibration of the complete system.
The 0–5 V programming interface allows control via a DAC, analogue control board or another suitable setpoint source. The accuracy of this source, grounding and filtering all influence the achievable system performance.

The series uses a six-sided shielded, nickel-plated metal housing and a low-ESR input filter. Housing size and weight vary according to the voltage range. Typical efficiency is approximately 40% for many models, although individual versions may differ.
Suitable applications and target users
- Photomultipliers and radiation-sensitive detectors
- Mass spectrometry and spectroscopy
- Medical and biotechnological analytical instruments
- Materials testing and scientific laboratory setups
- Semiconductor testing and electrostatic measurement technology
- OEM systems requiring analogue-programmable high voltage
The E1 Series is particularly suitable when a wide voltage range up to 8 kV is required and regulation with low ripple is a priority. The F1 Series may be more suitable for extreme ambient temperatures, while the J3 Series offers 3 W for straightforward proportional applications.
Selection criteria
- Voltage and polarity: Select the specific model according to the required maximum voltage and load current.
- Programming source: Provide a clean 0–5 V signal with suitable resolution and stability.
- Grounding and isolation: The standard E1 Series does not provide galvanic isolation.
- Power dissipation: Consider efficiency and the thermal installation conditions in the system design.
- High-voltage routing: Match the connection method, clearances, shielding and safety concept to the actual voltage.
Custom APD configurations
APD manufactures a broad range of standardised high-voltage converters and also evaluates customer-specific requirements. If the output voltage, input, programming interface, housing, connection method or electrical characteristics of a standard model do not fit, a customised solution can be developed.
